The German association of the automotive industry, VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie) blames the government's transport policy. "We expect that the reduction in subsidies for purely battery-electric cars and the abolition of subsidies for plug-in hybrids will continue to have a negative impact on the expansion of electromobility," said the president of the VDA, Hildegard Müller. Nevertheless, the association predicts that more fully electric vehicles will be sold this year: an increase of 8 per cent or 510,000 units.

At the same time, however, the VDA predicts a massive drop of 30 per cent to 255,000 plug-in hybrids sold. Overall, the association warns that sales this year will be eight per cent lower than in 2022. In the first month of the year, the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) recorded a collapse in new registrations of electric cars, contrary to the previous trend. Purely electric cars lost more than 13 per cent compared to the same month last year, plug-in hybrids even more than 50 per cent.t the turn of the year, the government cut the state subsidy for fully electric cars from 6.000 to 4.500 euros and cancelled the subsidy for plug-in hybrids completely. Criticism came from the Christian Democratic CDU/CSU parliamentary group, which announced its intention to campaign for an extension.
