A corresponding agreement in principle has been concluded with Gasunie, which has been the sole operator to date. The takeover is to be completed on 1 October 2023, Vopak announced. In response to the Russian war against Ukraine and the resulting risks for gas supply, Gasunie has built a floating LNG terminal in Eemshaven with a capacity of 8 billion cubic metres per year. It has been in operation since September 2022. Together, Vopak and Gasunie now want to explore the possibilities for expanding capacity and importing green hydrogen.

Together, Gasunie and Vopak already operate the gate terminal for LNG in Rotterdam. Here, the current capacity is 16 billion cubic metres per year. After an open season showed the need for another 4 billion cubic metres, the terminal operators want to create additional capacity via a fourth tank and thus increase it to 20 billion cubic metres. The final investment decision for the expansion is being sought by September 2023, reported Vopak.
